Non Profit Cottonwood Institute is offering students and adults courses in Survival. Their courses teach camping and wilderness survival skills. These are not your typical “survival” courses… though those are offered. They teach winter survival, animal tracking and various other types of courses. Located in Colorado may of us may not be able to attend, but for those who are planning a summer vacation, this may be something worth considering. Courses range from 1-7 days and from $125 – $1,095 per course. More details after the jump:

Wildland Firefighter Project 7 days $995
The Wildland Firefighter Project is designed for adventurous high school students who want to learn more about fire ecology and wildfire behavior, receive wildland firefighter training, practice firefighter survival techniques, and learn more about the controversy surrounding wildfire management. During this course we will also complete much needed wildfire mitigation projects to minimize the fire danger of the Upper Arkansas Valley working closely with the Colorado Firecamp, a wildland firefighter school in Salida, Colorado. Stone Age Survival Project 7 days $1,095
We will focus on learning and practicing stone-age survival skills, including shelter, fire, cordage, how to make basic stone tools, primitive pottery, and primitive hunting tools like atl-atls. As we learn the cultural survival skills of our ancestors, we will discuss ways to reduce our ecological footprint living in this modern age. We will apply these ideas of treading lightly on the earth by completing much needed ecological service projects at Earth Knack, including fire mitigation, organic gardening, composting, straw bale, and adobe construction. While the days will be action packed, there will be plenty of time in the evenings for relaxing around the fire, hanging out, and philosophizing. More Info
Horse Caretaker Project 7 days $1,095
During this course, you will practice essential camping and wilderness survival skills, including friction fire and natural shelter building skills, participate in an interactive survival scenario, practice basic horseback riding skills and techniques, and will work together as a group to complete much-needed horse caretaking service projects, including: assisting as junior wranglers, grooming horses, and cleaning tack. Endangered Wolves and Animal Tracking 7days $995
We will spend the week learning about the world of wolves, the importance of predators in an ecosystem, animal tracking and awareness skills, wolf recovery efforts, as well as the natural and cultural history of our new environment. We will spend the week caring for wolves and their habitat in a peaceful refuge while learning how to support wild wolf recovery in Colorado and throughout the United States. More Info
Mt. Evans Volunteer Project 3 days FREE!
This volunteer opportunity is for adventurous folks who want to blend their passion for climbing these awesome peaks and who feel compelled to heed the call to help restore and protect them. We will hike our gear in a few miles and spend the weekend in a remote backcountry campsite on Mt. Evans with the Colorado Fourteeners Initiative (CFI). More Info

Essential Survival Skills 4 Days $495
During this 4-day course we will hike to a base camp where we will spend two days practicing nature awareness skills, minimum impact camping techniques, learning survival priorities, building natural shelters, and starting environmentally responsible fires using primitive and modern methods. On day three we will break into smaller groups and participate in a 24-hour survival scenario to put our skills to the test in a controlled environment. During our last day we will debrief our scenario, talk about long-term survival considerations, and complete an environmental service project to walk our talk and give back to the land. More Info

The Cottonwood Institute is excited to offer a one-day Winter Survival Skills course to practice the hard skills that will keep you alive during a short-term winter survival situation.
